Chests, Abilities and more!

Hello everyone,

This is the first devlog for the game I'm currently working on. WanderFox is a pixel-art RPG game that is being made in the open-source game engine Godot. You play as a fox that collects Items, defeats enemies, collects abilities, explores the world, and does much more. I'm very happy about these upcoming changes.

Chests

Chests have been added to the game! This is one of the more important updates coming into the game. They do things, that you would expect a chest to do, like... open. Pretty gosh darn exciting I know. This is how they look like in the game. The sprite was made by Jan Schneider and I think it fits the game quite well. You can of course interact with these chests, but so far they don't contain a lot...

Abilities

In the game, you're going to collect more abilities as you progress the game. Remember how I said that the chest doesn't contain a lot? Yeah, there's one important thing I didn't mention and that is that there's a chest containing the Bush ability. The gif might be a little bit confusing, but here's what's going on: If you find the chest, that contains the bush ability and you open it, you can come near a bush and hide inside of it. This makes your movement speed slower, but enemies can not see you. It's the perfect camouflage if you want to get to an area that is filled with enemies, you don't feel like fighting right now. If you attack or roll, you lose the bush and the enemies can see you again.

One more thing I would like to mention about this ability is the "announcement" that tells you that you unlocked it. I tried to make it easy to understand while also make it look good. I got heavily inspired by the game Hollow Knight and how they show and explain new abilities. Definitely let me know what you think of it.

Project went open source

Yeah, that's right you heard me. The project is available on my GitHub profile. Feel free to do anything you feel like doing with it. Coding is not really my thing so if you find anything that could get optimized or improved (and trust me, you definitely will), reach out to me. I think that for this project to go open source is nothing but a healthy thing.

Conclusion and what comes next

So these are all the new things coming to WanderFox. Keep in mind that all of these could change during the development so nothing here is final. Next, I'm planning on making a simple inventory system with all the abilities displayed, a whole new location, a new enemy type, and a new ability. I know that all of this is a lot (considering I'm doing this project solo), but these are the things, that I'm going to be working on from now on, but probably not all of them are going to be finished until the next devlog. If you have got any idea for a new ability/change or feedback definitely write a comment. Feedback is one of the most valuable things for me and can really help me improve the game.

That's all from me for now,
Goodbye! 👋
